The binding ritual known as the Swordbond marries a swordmage’s magic to his weapon. This enables the swordmage to summon their weapon from across space to their hand no matter where it is. The Eladrin have perfected this ritual in a ceremony where the sword is forged by the swordmage’s own hand, and the weapon is permanently bound to the wielder’s very soul.

This is how Codren forged his Stormbiter Warblade, but when the blade was yet fresh, it was corrupted by dark powers. As the eladrin city of Astrazalian rocked from the mortal realm to the feywild, a weak spot in the dimensional fabric tore open, and broke through into the Shadowfell. Codren and his friend and partner Vayastra were tasked with sealing this shadow rift that had formed in one of the city mausoleums, but the magic that destroyed the spectres and sealed the rift impregnated the blade, and tainted Codren’s soul.
